Beginning with a red Urushi lacquer. The stripes are then created by adding a layer of real abalone shells from the Japanese sea. The shells are ground with a hard stone into thin sheets to be used in the process.

They are then cut and fixed on the pen with lacquer and then coated and polished for a stunning end result. Originally reserved for Japanese royalty, the maki-e technique represents wealth and power. Each hand crafted pen is then signed and numbered by the artist making the Pelikan M1000 Raden Sunrise Red fountain pen truly a fine crafted masterpiece. The Pelikan M1000 Raden Sunrise Red fountain pen is then fitted with an 18k gold two tone medium nib.
